The Southern Alberta Model Railway Club was established in 1972 by 12 individuals, and some of the founding members are still active in the organization. To accommodate the club's growth, the clubhouse has been expanded twice since its original construction, with the latest expansion finished in 2017.
The club features three main model railroad layouts. The first is an HO scale layout, set in the 1950s and 1960s, which includes steam and early diesel locomotives. This layout is based on the fictional railway, Alberta Southern, running from Southern Alberta, through the British Columbia mountains, to a port on the coast. The HO layout, with 90% hand-laid track and switches, includes a 300-foot single-track mainline, passing sidings, and a branch line. The scenery, which is more than 80% complete, depicts a variety of landscapes, including mountains, hills, a city, a small town, and port facilities. Train operations are controlled by Digital Command Control (DCC), and the layout features realistic signaling and Centralized Traffic Control (CTC).
The second layout is built in N scale. It combines a 4x16-foot portable layout, used for exhibitions, with a 7x21-foot permanent layout. The portable section is designed to display several trains running through both city and countryside environments. The permanent N scale layout, which is operational but still being built, is a single-track line through mountainous terrain, designed to showcase the impressive scenery achievable in the smaller scale.
The third layout is a G scale, “around the ceiling” layout. Primarily used for public events, the layout was built from equipment and track that was donated to the club in 2018.
The club consists of approximately 20 to 30 members. We meet every Tuesday evening from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Members contribute a wide range of talents to the club, including track wiring, scenery construction, building structures, layout operation, and the repair and construction of locomotives and freight cars. Many members also simply enjoy operating the trains. The club extends an open invitation to anyone interested in meeting the members and seeing the layouts.
